We took a trip down to the Big Sur Section of Highway 1 in California in our DIY Sprinter Campervan. This #Vanlife vlog covers a few of the activities we did in Big Sur California. Those landslides didn’t hold us back from seeing this beautiful area of the country.

Nate and Steph are a couple of crazy adventurers who decided that life was too short to spend their time and money accumulating “stuff.” So, they set out in an RV in January 2016 to travel North America and replace their stuff with experiences. In March 2017, they sold their RV and bought a Sprinter Van, which they built out into a campervan to continue their travels and adventures in #vanlife style.
Both originally from the small town of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Nate and Steph enjoy learning about new cultures and experiencing different ways of life across the world. They like to meet new people from all walks of life and just sit and have a beer with whoever shows up. It’s all about spontaneity in this life!
They travel with their two pups, Pyros and Sparta, who have become great travelers and adventure pups as well.

Great to see you in my neck of the woods! We live South of there. Have you been to the Morro Bay area?
Love those boards!!! Gorgeous beach!
I am curious, the music thats playing during your videos, I would like to find out, the groups of band and names of the music you both are playing .
Great job, informative as always. You are creating memories, learning about the country by bring textbooks to life. I remember reading about Grand Canyon, then standing there on the rim, later hiking, WOW, the books came to life. Famous last words, turn off the news and make some of your own.
I think this video was the complete package. Just enough background, useful information on how you get there, how you camp. I owned a truck and trailer but recently bought a small, low roof type city van. I know I can do the absolute basics in it, with the DC fridges and no flame type heaters. It would be swell to do a van like yours, but I don't need a tiny house so much as a tiny travel pod for a couple of weeks. Touring, every now and then. There are some 'kit' solutions for this van, like instant insulation and floor (Wayfarer). I'd be thrilled to find a few trips like this every time I went out.
I was outside Lake Havasu City last winter. There is a pretty canyon you can drive up, with 14 day BLM camping along the rather primitive road. With the trailer I was reluctant to go very far. The road was narrow and there were a lot of camping vehicles. In a little van I would just go. But there are those dreaded words with any RV "No place to turn around".
I watched all your build videos and it's very clear and straightforward. Living in something like your Sprinter would be interesting. I looked at the big Promaster, but for daily life it is way too much. I also want a setup that is camper sometimes and the rest of the time a pretty hard core utility vehicle.
You guys have a great attitude. It's not all Gee Whiz, over the top. This was truly spectacular stuff and you were impressed. I like that. I'd like to know your thoughts on finding camping, whether you do urban camping, that sort of thing. There are a fair number of urban van dwellers. I was surprised to see that one auto reviewer site includes an assessment of small vans for how well they work as homes. (Yeah Truck is the site, so not a big name).
Oh man! Trying to decide what awesome thing to do next is definitely one of the toughest things about #vanlife. No, seriously, we've been on the road for over a year and deciding what to do each day wares on you.
Great vid. Quick tip out on the SUP…. your paddle is backwards. The angle of the paddle should face forwards–you'll get way more power with each stroke (usually the logo on the paddle points forward). I'm hoping to surf that stretch one of these days too.
Great video.
Hello. May I ask what you do with your dogs when you leave the van? Do you have a special setup you leave them in while you're away? How do they stay cool, etc? Thank you for sharing your adventures.
congratulation on your adventures. sucess for both of you, be well and take care.
also, always make preventive maintenance on your vehicle after long earth roads, you don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere 🙂
have fun
Great Video again guys!
Big thumbs up, much enjoyed…
Great Video-sooo much better than the ones sitting in the van talking. Maybe try doing some of your talking vids outside! Love the scenery! Hope they get Highway 1 open by next summer when I will be there in my van!
very cool, enjoy!
I see you're in the Big Sur area, then if you go up to Carmel, Ca; then you'll probably see what is officially called "Monastery Beach" (The Monastery which is close by);; however the beach for all of its beauty is called by the natives as "Mortuary Beach"; known to take out people who don't watch the waves when they break, or divers who seem to choose the wrong place to dive (Middle of the "Horse Shoe", and get taken out by the high tides and the force of the waves. If you want to snorkle, or Scuba; then the best place to enter is around the two sides of the beach near the rocks.
Oh, the reason its called Mortuary Beach is the high number of people who get taken out by the unexpected high waves, and for divers the strong currents, plus the large Kelp beds. Also the bottom of the beach has a massive drop off point some 800 yards off the shore, which leads to the beginning of the "Monterey Canyon" which is the deepest part of the Monterey Bay. It usually drops off sharply to around 1,000 feet some 100 yards off shore, and continues to go even deeper to around 19,000 feet within a few miles from shore. Oh the water is generally around 50 degrees…. Have fun….lol
Does your van have a lift? I noticed the all terrain tires. Also heard you mention the overland app. I will have to check it out. Are your planning on going to the overland expo in Flagstaff in May?
Don't turn sideways to the surf
