Kyle where did you pick up your trailer rebuilding skills? You've already restored one trailer and now another. Kudos to you both. (Olivia, just because you can bend it, doesn't mean anything. Good idea to splint it for a few days….let it rest, advice from retired ER nurse). Hugs to you both, SAFETY GOGGLES, Kyle!
I'm sorry to leave you a PS on another show. But I want you to know that y'all do whatever feels comfortable to y'all and especially to River. Thank you again…
Corroseal is what we are using on our conversion – it converts the rust to a paintable surface. Also there is no need to grind off any of the rust – you simply have to take off any loose rust
Wow big job. Talk about sweat equity. Awesome y'all.
Many good suggestions given here. Something to remember is that POR-15 is humidity cured, so buy it in small cans, once it has been opened, it has a very limited life especially in southern AL or southern FL (where I'm from) POR-15 is very difficult to paint over since it is so hard, other paint won't chemically bond to it very well. I have used it with pretty good results. If it is used on the underside, there is no reason to paint over it. UV causes it to turn chalky, but not a big deal on the under side. Epoxy primer is what most car restorers are using now. You can buy a generic Ospho at Home Depot.- it turns iron oxide(rust) into iron phosphate, I believe. Also this web site has a lot of this type stuff that car restorers use (I am not associated with them in any way) https://search.eastwood.com/search?w=rust%20converter. Some key words: Rust converter, Chassis black, rust encapsulator. Hope this helps & we enjoy your You-Tube channel.
POR 15 from your local auto body supply store. It is the only thing that will come close to stopping rust. you wont have to paint over it either.
Any plans to lift the trailer profile while you have easier acess to the axle? Those exterior propane lines concerned me as well, what happens if you bottom out on a back road? Any plans to run inside instead of underneth?
Kyle, I am a machinist and I work with metals for a living, you need to use Ospho Rust Converter it makes a chemical reaction with the rust and hard coats it and turns the metal black. Use a wire brush or sand blast (sand blasting is best) then ospho where it turns black is where rust still is. Make sure your use a respirator and face shield and chemical gloves, the stuff is very corrosive and will burn your skin. I live in pace fl. and you can contact me at lt.tomigun@gmail.com. if you have any questions, I have renovated cars, boats, and trailers for 40 years. If you get stuck on something send me an email I can probably help.
Good Luck. Tom My Wife and I really enjoy you channel. We plan to full time soon.
sand blast will remove all rust
Use POR15!!
Hi baby girl Hi Kyle 🙂 Wow Kyle you really put in some work!! WTG!! If it were me I would be taking pictures of where things are before removing them just in case I wanted to put them back in the same place. But you've already done restoration to the other RV so you know what you're doing. Hopefully I'll make it to Alabama before you're done and I'll be able to give you guys a hand 🙂
Tractor supply has iron oxscide primer and tractor enamel paint that really protects raw and or rusty steel. I just primed and painted my hauling trailer last year. Fallow the directions.

This is going to be a very interesting learning experience for all of us. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer.. sort of converts the rust.
Try Ospho for treating rust.
Reach out to Chris and G regarding treating and painting rust. Chris used a treatment/paint when he was redoing his school bus frame and metal floor. Suggest you install new copper tubing and fittings for your propane system. Copper work-hardens with time and vibration and may not flare correctly when you reassemble it. The old tubing may have pinholes and other damage that you find different to track done. Your propane system is the most dangerous part of your rig…use new tubing and fittings.
as for rust protection, I post and read a lot on ford-truck.com the 7.3L forums and guys with 4×4 that do a lot of snow plowing up north have issues with rust on frame too. Some use a product call POR 15 or a product called fluid film, which you can spray on. under a truck is a different case then the frame of a TT. I am sure you will find good info on airforums and don't forget the facebook airstream addicts page for info. good luck.
Good luck with the renovation. Looks like a challenge. Sorry about your finger!
Wow what a job ahead!! Good luck, work safe.
Sorry to hear about your finger, Olivia. I hope it's nothing serious. You're doing more demo than I expected! Cool to see all of this work, though!
You might want to save the belly pans, so that you have a template. Â I used post its on my inner panel's. Then I took a video to go around the trailer so I have some good visuals. Good luck.
Best stuff for rust on a frame is POR 15Â https://www.amazon.com/POR-15-45404-Gloss-Black-Preventive/dp/B00H2VVQNU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1518314155&sr=8-2&keywords=por15+rust+preventative+paint
POR15 or RustSeal are great products for cleaning up old car/truck/trailer frames ( http://www.howmuchsnow.com/oldcar.html ). It is not meant to be used on things that get UV from sunlight. Also DO NOT get it on your skin or it will be with you for quite a while 🙂
I have restored 3 old Saabs, Â the best thing for rust is a product called POR-15. Â Not cheap, Â but you paint it over the rust, Â you can smack it with a hammer and it won't chip. Â It is amazing. Â then you can paint over it if you want. Â I swear by it. Â 1 Â 8oz can goes a long way. Â oh and wear gloves if you get it on your skin it is there for a week. Â Great job, Â Cheers. Â Check out my 1978 camper van on instagram @kylepemrick
Rust treatment Corroseal is very good. I've used Rust bullet and POR15 also. I found the Rust Bullet very expensive and the POR 15 a little complicated. The Corroseal is inexpensive and very easy to apply and did a very good job.
Consider replacing your subfloor with marine plywood – painted with an oil base paint and the edges well sealed. . All RV’s should be built this way.
Can't believe that tubing is exposed on the bottom. I'd be afraid to snag it on a rock or something.
Another Argosy rehab… you should compare notes…

oooowch things happen
It's an axiom that every restoration project will (a) discover hidden issues, (b) take more time than anticipated, and (3) cost more money, ditto. So I'd say you're off to quite the normal beginning! I've already momed you about safety in other comments, so I won't belabor the point here. Looks like you've already gotten lots of good advice and constructive input from people with lots of experience. So, onward! I'm very happy for you and excited about watching your progress.
Perhaps this would be a good time to raise the trailer about a foot for easier access to the underside projects.
Here's a YouTube showing how to use and make an inexpensive walnut blaster gun/tool to remove rust and paint from metal: https://youtu.be/k6L_ArXCbYs
Hey guys you could treat the rust with Naval jelly than prime with a galvanized primer, I would use one you can roll or brush on, both of these can be found at an auto parts store, good luck 🙂
POR 15 is a great rust converter. There are also other products that do the same thing. You will need to paint over it. Don't get it on your hands.
