I recently read an article from truckcampermagazine.com that was about the 2016 Travel Lite Rayzr. This is a line of truck campers without the cab-over bed! A much different concept and type of truck camper.
In the video I review the article written and give a little bit of my take on this type of truck camper.

I know this an older video but I just ran across it and can answer at least one of your questions. We owned an FK model with the A/C in the side. We had gone from pulling a 6000 lb tandem axle, single slide travel trailer with our Ram 1500 with the V-6 Pentastar engine averaging 12.8 mpg (13.8 mpg with a previous single axle 3500 lb travel trailer). I was very disappointed with the Razyr as it got the same as the large TT … 12.8 mpg. And this is with an engine that gets in the 20 mpg range easily unloaded. Also for comparison, we bought a Ram 2500 with the 6.4 L Hemi with an Adventurer 80RB on it and put 8,500 miles on it last spring averaging 13.9 mpg, so the Rayzr was nothing to write home about aerodynamically. Also I was concerned about the fact that there is no drain designed in for the condensate from the A/C unit. According to Travel Lite, there is a pan underneath the A/C that collects the water and then they say it just evaporates. This is short sighted thinking in my opinion. It's very reasonable for condensate to accumulate faster than it can evaporate so all that water has no choice but to go down between the wall. Also, our 1075 lb FK unloaded tipped the Cat scales at 1325 lbs.
I need to tow a boat and I’m almost always by myself. I’m building a non-cabover camper that is similar to the front bed design.
l live in one full time, here's my channel…RAYZR FB Boondocker. The price point was the biggest seller, plus it has everything a typical C/O has. I live alone and nobody comes to visit, so its perfect for me. I travel in it as well for weekend getaways from the campground or boondocking area. Very similar to a full size fully equiped Semi Sleeper
It's not the most attractive camper, but the price is right… I could easily live in that space.
Ugly.
Love the F/K I'll put that on a trailer. We call that a Red Neck Special
I own the FB. I race Dirtbikes. Just at night in it on weekends. Usually by myself. It’s perfect. I can still pull a trailer. Or put my Dirtbike carrier in the truck receiver and not need a trailer. Definitely specialized but what I wanted. They are light. My biggest disappointment is the fuel economy. Not as good as I wanted. Empty I’m 15-17 on hwy. 10-12 with it. With trailer too when my camper is in bed I’m 8.5- a touch over 10 MPG.
For a single it's a winner ,don't need a big motor truck to get it down the road I like it.
I have seen similar 70's style campers like that, but they are rare
I think a Razor would be great for a one person quick getaway. Easy, light and small. It has potential
They say you can close the tailgate. What if you are inside and some jerk shuts your tailgate. How are you suppose to get out?
I have one it's really nice it's hard to get over how stupid I'll looks.
Capri has been making a cowboy camper like this for 40 years. Basically a bed and a box. Don't need nuthin else.
There was a guy on YouTube that said he owned one and got rid of it due to drag and being less fuel efficient.
Yeah those are real cool, and eliminates the bulk of an overhead cab, I drove a pickup truck from Utah to Illinois with a old heavy cab over type and it was a rocking back and forth nightmare in any kind of wind, could barely hold my truck between the lines, anyway this is not a new idea ! non cab overs models were available in the 60s and 70s, Razor just made them all new and a great new design, buying one soon.
I like the concept, I just like the Alaskan Camper execution of it the best!
I'm thinking "Glorified Teardrop" … that slides in the truck bed. No woman will want to sleep in it if there is no toilet. In my experience, that is the 1st thing they want to see (a bathroom). Cute concept though. If they went with an 8 foot box and had a "hang over" out the tail, they could put SO much more into it. Thanks for making the video Brian. 🙂
My wife and I just got the Rayzr FB a couple months back and we love it. We also have a 30' 5th, but we are unable to pull out 20' bass boat behind the 5th wheel. For fishing or hunting trips this is a great little camper.
If I was still working away for four to five days in the forest I would have one.
I'd like to see a pop-up version of this camper….for better fuel economy and perhaps lighter weight. It is still too heavy at the dry weight of 1,070 lbs….maybe get rid of the carpeting, cabinets? Payload of my Tundra is 1430 lbs TOTAL, and I hope to be hauling a horse trailer at the same time with a tongue weight of 500 to 750 lbs…….Looks like I still should buy a simple cap for sleeping, a camping cooler and a coleman stove!
this is hilarious. but actually would be pretty mint if you had a 8' box in my opinion. but i JUST bought today the 2015 f150 super cab (6 1/2 box) and i looked online the the travel lite truck campers model 625 will be 6' 21/2" ? so you can close your tail gate and i think that would be perfect. but this one here…id actually consider for the price tag and just use it every summer !
Still to heavy, I think, for a 1/2 ton pulling a horse trailer. My Tundra has a payload of only 1430 lbs and with a trailer tongue weight of 750 lbs that sure does not leave much weight for a camper. I'd like to find a tall cap or canopy with just the very bare necessities….no posh paneling or carpet with a dry weight of about 400 lbs. Still looking!
what more do I need….. nice sleeper….
what more do I need….. nice sleeper….
I've had something like that in mind for a long time. I have bad knees and that cabover is a challenge.
+The Camping Trucker I think I would really consider a soft side truck camper if I didn't use my camper almost exclusively in the winter time. Sprucing up an old camper is the way to go! You can make it your own and save tons of $! Sounds like that is a good looking truck camper!
Hey bud, nah I like my soft side truck camper. Its a 1984 Vacationeer with plenty of room and I love my queen size over cab bed. I paid $750 for it and put a thousand into it and its all mine. I switch out all the 1×2 pine framing with 1×4 oak wood and coated it with poly urethane. It should last a good long time. All new butal tape no leaks new rubber roof coating to. She's an oldie but a goodie..
Talk about an air brake. Gee whiz.
I like this concept, because you're packing so much into a very small space. How about 2 slides? Seriously, that would add some room.
Too small, I need max room to sleep, it's all about the bed and not having to stow in order function. Great review!
I have been waiting for a cheaper lighter truck camper . For 1-2 people it seems to fit the bill . I have been looking at shell type campers , when camping I am outside a lot of the time . Cook outside keeping the moisture and smelly stuff out of the camper . camp sites have a bathroom , I just need a place to store food, clothes, and sleep in it .Leave the t.v. at home , watch a fire and enjoy nature ! Smaller ,lighter more fuel efficient is what we need today .
I really appreciate all of your feedback and will take it all into consideration in making design improvements moving forward! Since the inception of the product (and when the photos in the video were taken) we now have lowered the overall height by 3" for further asthetics and aerodynamics. Also we have released a fourth floorplan designed for mid-sized trucks! It's called the Rayzr FB-M. I like to think outside the box and come up with solutions for different applications. We have built cabover campers for 17 years and now ship around 27% of all registered RVIA truck campers. The reception to the Rayzr has been great and in less 2 months we have already sold 68 Rayzrs. My main focus is giving the end consumer a new option that for some of my Rayzr customers have already said is "What I have been waiting for, for years!" For more info you can visit http://www.RayzrCamper.com and also http://www.TravelLiteCampers.com. Thanks to you Colorado Camperman for all of your videos…there great!
I like it. The first thing I thought of when I looked at it was I could put my kayaks on top of truck cab and not pull a trailer!! Thanks for the video
Thing is ugly as hell…….
looks like a big waste of $$$ to me. Better off with a used trailer for the same money.
