2007 Mercedes GL450 long-term review. Let’s learn the real costs of ownership
joetunney.com
Buying a used Mercedes GL450? Watch this first! The Fast Lane with Joe Tunney – Hi, this is the Fast Lane with Joe Tunney (joeloveshawaii@gmail.com) bringing to you a comprehensive catalogue of hundreds of great vehicles from throughout the automobile industry. Although I specialize in Acura, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, sports cars, SUV’s and of course my beloved Honda product line, I also like to review exotic cars from time to time like Ferrari, Dodge Viper, turbocharged all-wheel-drive cars like Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru WRX, as well as affordable vehicles that fit into every budget. For 2017 I am going to make a point of reviewing everything on the market, demonstrating for you the interior and exterior features and specifications, the wheels and tires, trunk space, as well as an overview of power, technology, economy and driving characteristics to give you factual information as well as information unique to this particular vehicle so that you can enjoy a more intelligent shopping experience without ever having to step onto the lot. A little about me. I have been the manager at Infiniti of Kirkland, Honda and Toyota of Seattle and prior to that I ran a high end car boutique in neighboring Bellevue, Washington. For my career I have sold over 10,000 cars so I hope to bring you far more insight than you might ever know to even ask. I show you in some videos how to see if a car has been in an accident, how to make a great buy on a car with a bad Carfax, or why I wouldn’t personally buy a car even if it has favorable reviews. Every once in a while I’ll even have a little fun to keep the videos fresh but I want to make certain you know that you can always email me at joeloveshawaii@gmail.com if you ever have any questions or feel I have made a mistake or used poor judgment or poor taste. I am truly thankful for the millions of views and more importantly, perhaps much more importantly, I am honored to have been viewed in over 200 countries around the world. We all are ambassadors for the things we believe in regardless of where we were born and from my little corner of the world here outside of Kona, Hawaii in Waikoloa I want to express my sincere gratitude for you having invited me into your home, your place of work, or for simply taking a minute of your valuable time to listen to what I have to say. Maybe we will never meet face to face, but I am forever in your debt for giving me the opportunity to share with you the things I have learned. Did you buy it brand new at the time?
Glad you mentioned the shocks, ours broke down at just 63000 miles…over 3500 to replace all…but we are keeping it , it is indeed a really comfortable and otherwise solid car to drive..
I was expecting some numbers on the cost of ownership, type of repairs etc. Did not want a tour of the car.
Does your car ever have a slow start?
Regarding the oil you can use any 229.5 approved synthetic oil whether it be 0W40 or 5W40. Mobil 1 European formula was only recommended by Mercedes because at the time your GL came out both MB and Mobil 1 had a partnership. As long as the oil has a 229.5 approval and you use a fleece filter you can do the 1 year/10k oil change.
The Gelande Wagen is still made by Steyr Puch in Austria and cost way north of $150,000!
Bullshit.
The Gelande Wagen is a totally different mil spec boxy vehicle.
The GL is a German attempt to capture Range Rover cache.
This guy is ill informed.
I truly appreciate the time you have took to do this review. I'm truly considering getting this SUV, and I'm really happy you went over the specifics.

FYI, it's not normal for your GL to go through a quart of oil in 1000 miles. My 18-year-old E320 doesn't consume that much oil that quickly. Keep in mind that the GL450 has a 9-quart oil capacity. Your typical Jiffylube is likely unaware of this oil capacity and assumes that it only takes 6-8 quarts like most vehicles. The more likely scenario is that whoever is changing your oil is underfilling your GL, leading to warnings of low oil and the discovery of missing quarts. I will further guess that once you add the missing quarts, the problem goes away…until the next oil change, that is.
I like your videos but on this one I was expecting more details about the long term use of the car and experience vs a run down of what the car has and doesn’t have as it if it were a first time review. Also the quality of the video could have been way better if you had started on the other side of the car where the sun was hitting it vs shooting into the sun. Anyway keep up the great work and I look forward to a follow up on how this car has performed in Hawaii.
Great job .could you tell us what you spent on maintenance and how many years you owned, so we know what to expect on avg upkeep per year
Thanks again great job
Thanks Joe, great video roughly how much can one expect to pay on monthly insurance on a car like that?
I really appreciate the detailed review of this vehicle. We are considering buying a 2007 with 90,000 kilometres. I don’t understand why these vehicles lose value so badly. The truck is mint condition with no accidents and they’re asking $14,900 Canadian. Thanks again
Great job .could you tell us what you spent on maintenance and how many years you owned ,so we k ow what to expect on avg upkeep per year
Thanks again great job
In terms of the oil, do you just add oil every 1,000 miles on top of regular oil changes or do you need to take it to the shop when it needs more oil?
Considering buying one of these for my wife. I think it's time to sell our well-loved BMW X5 and cross over to the dark side (Mercedes).
JJUST WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR VIDEOS'S….SO HELPFUL WITH MY FUTURE PURCHSE
Why did you sell it??
Uses one quart of oil every one thousand miles but there's nothing wrong with it
wot you talk`n`bout willis ?
We have a 2016 GL350 bluetec. LOVE IT
Joe sounds so humble
Tons &a tons tons or boot space. Have been inside a Audi Q7? Much bigger with a better interior.
been watching your videos for about a month now , and I can honestly say ,what a difference in friendliness. infiniti of Manhattan is good however they want to give you what they haven't been selling , for example in 2012 I went to lease a m37x I wanted the white with cream interior , they kept showing me maximas, qx56 with weird bluish colors, and I kept telling them with all due respect, I would like to see what I asked for , and they wasn't showing me , until I said "you know what BMW is not far from here thank you have a great day " and they said " you win " and they pulled the car from the back and I leased it , point being u have to haggle hear in ny, and you don't see friendly people at dealerships , anyways good luck on your new channel your videos are very informative
I agree with your reviews and observations regarding oil usage. I've had various MB's for 15yrs. A lot of online trashing sometimes, but most of them are due to owners not doing proper maintenance.
A skate board park and no skateboarders, in the house playing Xbox.
Love the videos…keep em coming
That's not even what GL stands for.
Anyone that likes to keep money .
pass on any used Benz .My Honda Suv had 288 thousand miles on it and burned zero oil ..
.tells you all u need to know …also it ran grt on ANY oil .Mercs are so expensively made when they need service it cost so much because of the so called better tech
What a joke.
This is a better video about basic maintenance on these cars. Most people who do not own a Mercedes which say that they are money pits.
Excellent review
"It is some of the nicest leather you will ever find in a vehicle" it's not actually leather it's what they call mb-Tex which is standard in all their suv's besides the G-class unless you opted to pay an extra few thousand for real "nappa leather"
great review! Whats next?
dont film against the sun…. makes for too bright video…
11 year old cars has a clunky nav compared to cars today? You think?
Great job! I want to get want for my very sweet wife she needs something pretty bad God has blessed me with her and I want to bless her with a gl450.. Thank you I was wondering if this is a good Suv to have. Im still saving but it looks like this is a great SUV.

this is my first time seeing one of your videos, great job! PLEASE get a wireless lapel mic or headset of some sort so I can hear you better. I am torn between this truck and the x5. Have fun in paradise!
Hey nice video and glad to see you back
Good to see you back, Joe.
Good to see you back! Are you selling cars in Hawaii now?
Super nice truck. Is it for sale? Nice review, as well.
Your truck looks amazing
I have read countless reviews that the reliability on these GL is that they are 3 out of 5 in reliability very hit or miss.
I've read they have terrible electrical problems and the fixes and maintenance are super pricey. Can you tell
Me anything v
